                                                 History

Sultana was built in Boston in 1767 at Benjamin Hallowell’s shipyard as a pleasure boat andsmall trader. The schooner was also said to be a dispatch carrier in the North Atlantic, carry-ing important papers, money, or objects overseas. In 1768, Sultana was purchased by theBritish Royal Navy and taken to the Deptford Naval Shipyard in England for Survey.After being remasted, fitted out with weapons, and name the Sultana, the schooner returnedto Boston as a dispatch boat and revenue cruiser. The Sultana patrolled the East Coastbetween Boston and Chesapeake Bay, enforcing Britain’s Navigation and Stamp Acts.The ship was involved in many incidents with colonial smugglers and seized significantamounts of contraband. After four years of service, and badly in need of repair and refitting,the schooner was sold out of service
